Dirty Little Secret

I decided that I’m going to put a twist on this week’s Behind the Music Post. I am still going to give you the behind the music of the song, but this week I’m also going to give you an insight on what this song means to me and reminds me of.

Behind the Music Friday

Dirty Little Secret – The All American Rejects

Dirty Little Secret” is the first single by the rock band The All-American Rejects from their second studio album Move Along. The song was released in June of 2005 and its purpose was to take a look at the differences between our public and private selves.

The music video of the song was filmed at Dorney Park and other locations in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The video is based on the PostSecret project, an ongoing community art project where people mail
in their secrets anonymously on one side of a homemade postcard.

The song hit #9 on US Billboard Top 100. It has been featured in movies such as She’s the ManJohn Tucker Must DieBring It On: All or Nothing, and in American Pie: The Naked Mile. It was also played a few times in Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo.

Aside from appearing in the soundtrack of some films, Dirty Little Secret has also made several appearances in video games. It was released as a downloadable track for Rock Band and and was one of the five bonus songs for the Wii version of the game. It is also a playable track on Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades for the Nintendo DS, and is a playable song in Band Hero. Another game it appeared on was Pro Evolution Soccer 2010. The final chorus and outro of “Dirty Little Secret” can be heard on the Smallville season 5 episode “Hypnotic”. It later was selected for the Smallville soundtrack Smallville: The Metropolis Mix. Also, The All-American Rejects had a photo shoot for an ad for the Got Milk?advertising campaign, where “Dirty Little Secret” is parodied. Next to the picture of the band with milk-moustaches are the words “Dairy Little Secret”.

So here’s my “Dirty Little Secret”……

The hubby and I use to work together. Actually, that is how we met (I will get into the full drama of it another time). In any case, we met at work. We actually worked together for a bit and never even knew each other. How does that happen? It happens when you work in a large company and have opposing shifts. That was, until he got promoted and became my boss (GASP). The day he was promoted I had hung around the station to see who the new “boss man” was going to be. I congratulated him while walking by and he rubber-necked it to watch me walk away (I knew I had him that first day). Long story short (I’ll explain in juicy detail another time), we started dating and it had to be kept a secret. Management was not allowed to be personally involved with employees. We weren’t gonna let that stop us though.

Considering our work environment could put most soap operas to shame, it was difficult. The only one that knew, other than the two of us, was my partner. I trusted my partner enough to let him in on the secret. It did provide him with some entertainment though.

One night as our shift was ending, the “boss man” met us at Starbucks. We had coffee and said our goodbyes for the night. Dirty Little Secret came on the radio and my partner started blasting it through the parking lot.

“I’ll keep you my dirty little secret”

It completely caught us off guard because this Starbucks was one that our employees frequented and we were trying to keep “us” on the down-low. Our relationship was essentially a Dirty Little Secret. But with my partner rocking out and pointing at us, we couldn’t help but laugh. That was the very first time that the “Boss Man” kissed me in front of anyone, even though it was just my partner and a parking lot full of strangers.

So that is my “Life Behind the Music”. Hope you enjoyed my Dirty Little Secret.

Happy Friday All!
